Seminar: Music and Memory
This course involved collaborating with a quartet that met every week with the end goal being to serve and learn with a certain population in our community. This quartet included two students, including myself, as well as a person with a neurodegenerative disease (PwNDD) and their care partner. My quartet specifically was made of myself, another student, a female with alhziemers, and her husband who was her care partner. Every week, my student partner and I would meet online to have a coaching session with a certified art therapist. She would check in with us and give us different ideas of what activities to do with our quartet. At the end of every week we would hold an hour long online session, with our quartet, consisting of different art, music, and mindfulness activities. Some of our favorite activities as a group included a clapping circle, tapping to the beat of songs, “rose, bud, thorn”, drawing to songs, mountain meditation, and dancing together. The couple that my partner and I worked with loved to dance, so at the celebration meeting we had during the last week of classes, we led a dance for the other quartets to follow (see picture to the left). Throughout this seminar, I learned how to properly interact with people who have neurodegenerative disorders and their care partners. I learned how much the illness impacts both of them and how these short activities help to decrease some stress in their lives. Before this class, I knew about alzheimerz's and how it impacts the brain but I had never actually interacted with people who are directly impacted by it. I also learned how to get out of my comfort zone since singing and dancing isn't something I’m comfortable with but it's something I was willing to do to bring happiness to my quartet. Now that the course is completed, I have a different perspective on PwNDDs and the life of care partners. I feel like most of the time when I hear that someone was diagnosed with a disease, I begin to think about how they might be affected physically and mentally but now I have learned to think about the care partner or family members as well and how they might be impacted.

Seminar:
Intermediate Composition
This course was a breath of fresh air in my schedule full of STEM classes. It involved a lot of group discussions and analyzing articles in introduction to the essays we were writing. The main objectives of the class included learning about literacy, genre communication, and discourse communities. Through this seminar i was able to learn skills involved in understanding the impact being able to communicate with people has on someone, I learned how people can hsve different views on a community based on the way they see the community. We learned how similar things types of music, theater, books, or movies can be interpreted in many different ways based on the society or year it was created in. This seminar had such an important impact on me throughout the whole semester. As stated in the beginning, it allowed me to think about and learn about topics not related to my major. All of my classes are science based so this class allowed me to discuss with my peers, of different majors, on things that I wouldn be able to talk about in my regular classes. I now know how to deeply look into certai aspects of communities that I normally wouldnt think of. This is why I chose to showcase my final essay. This essay was a way for me to show how I learned to analyze different types of communication in a community. I was able to look deeply into a community that I am apart of, the mukbang community. I used my skills learned in the class to really understand why I am even in the community and what drew me into it.
Pre-approved: Bearcat Buddies Lead Tutor
Bearcat Buddies allowed me to experience something that I have loved since middle school. I love working with kids so to be able to tutor them in school is an exciting opportunity for me. When I first heard of bearcat buddies, I was intrigued by the opportunity to tutor any school grade and subject once a week. Then I heard of the lead tutor program and was even more interested. I was able to apply after my first semester of being a tutor. This pre-approved experience included being in charge of a tutor session and making sure the tutors in the session were prepared for their individual tutor sessions as well as making sure they were kept up to date with all the bearcat buddies’ events. This allowed me to build on my leadership skills. In the beginning I was skeptical since I am normally in the background when it comes to leading people in clubs but now, I had to be the tutors main contact person. I learned how to be more proactive in communicating with people and being a good leader while creating a friendly team environment for my tutor session. I am normally very quiet in new groups of people but as a lead tutor I knew that was not an ideal characteristic, so I learned to put more faith in my people skills and know that I am capable of properly leading the tutors. As a lead tutor I was also able to have more of a say on the decision making of bearcat Buddy events. Once a month there would be a council meeting, I would go to and be able to relay my opinions and ideas on events being made for the organization. This allowed me to learn more about the background functioning of a big organization, especially one that is very prominent in the community.

Seminar: Democratizing Healthcare
Democratizing Healthcare was one of my favorite honor’s seminars so far. The class was filled with amazing students, professors, learning opportunities and more. This class involved learning about the different types of healthcare used around the world, and the political/ societal views that impacted and shaped the formation of their healthcare. We aso touched on topics such as social determinants of health, and the ethics of healthcare. Since both of the professors in the class are from different educational fields, they made sure to educate us on topics in healthcare specific to their fields. We had speakers come in to talk about the struggles transgender people face with speech pathologists and then more speakers come in to talk about the struggles African American mothers face during their pregnancy. This is something I used to talk about for the final project in the class where we were told to dive deep into a health disparity in a specific part of the world; I decided to talk about the maternal health disparities in Nigeria (a link is attached to the presentation on the side). This class also involved a study abroad portion where we went to Germany for 10 days. It was such an amazing opportunity and was filled with many opportunities. We went on several walking tours around different cities, where we learned more about the history and culture of Germany. We also went to two different universities where we were able to have conversations about the differences in our healthcare with the German college students. This was a class and trip I will always remember.
